Errors in preparation and selection as well as documentation inaccuracies occur for a number of reasons. Multiple distractions, poor handwriting and lookalike/ soundalike drugs greatly contribute to the potential for medication errors. SLS embraces the call to improve patient and medication safety by:

  • image17 Complying with APSF recommendations that every anesthetizing location should have a mechanism to identify medications before drawing them up or administering them (bar code reader)
  • Automatically presenting clinicians with visual and audible confirmations of each drug and concentration, incorporating electronic checks to remove the element of human error Providing additional safety features when integrated with the hospital's electronic systems, including warnings for patient allergies or adverse drug interactions, etc

Safe Label System™  Administration Tool (AT)

image6 Overview

Never before has it been easier to empower every medication preparation area with pharmacylevel oversight and compliance. Codonics Safe Label System SLS 500i Point of Care Station (PCS) sits wherever medications are prepared and utilizes the integrated formulary database to increase patient safety and labeling compliance. This database, created using the SLS Administration Tool (AT), is the system’s management software that allows pharmacy to easily create and control a drug formulary, including siteapproved medications, concentrations and rules for use, expanding pharmacy’s scope of influence to the point of medication preparation.

image7 The AT enables a hospital pharmacy to:

  • Quickly and easily create a formulary that incorporates hospitalapproved drugs, merged with hospital policies, together with the Joint Commission (TJC) requirements, and American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) and ISO labeling guidelines
  • Control deployment of the formulary, configuration packages and software updates to any SLS PCS
  • Load siteapproved, customized formularies on each SLS PCS so that they are available to clinicians at the point of preparation and administration to safely verify, identify and confirm medications to increase patient safety and reduce medication errors

SLS includes a oneyear subscription to Lexicomp™Basic Drug Database. To populate the MDD with drug records users can import the Lexicomp database, their own database or add drugs manually.
